Microsoft “Morro” Security Essentials Beta

Ok, well I have “morro” loaded and running on Windows 7 RC.. seems ok so far, although only just loaded…  I guess what is good (apart from a free hopefully reasonable virus/spyware checker) is that you can load the 32 or 63 bit version… ok, maybe too geeky for most.

Anyway, I will monitor to see how it goes, and you should be able to try to download it from here (the microsoft site):

MSE 32bit (for most systems) version

MSE 64bit version

Let me know how you go, and good luck!

Netbooks and pesky touchpads!

Ok, so you have bought your nice little netbook (like I did, an Australian made Kogan for approx $450), and you load windows 7 rc onto it (I have a post on how to do this using a USB disk), but then you find as you type on the smaller but perfectly formed keyboard, the touchpad picks up your movements and the cursor and text end up everywhere!!

Well, a clever guy has decided to write a little software application that automatically freezes the touchpad as you type (even if the cursor moves, it doesn’t take the text with it).

You can get it from here and as it is free, you could possibly donate a little too!

Home - the new film from Luc Besson released straight to the web

I guess releasing movies straight to the web (youtube in this case) isn’t really that new.. a few have certainly been done before.  Although Luc Besson’s latest movie “Home” is certainly one to watch.  Sort of Baraka with commentary, it has amazing shots of planet earth, and a few interesting facts to digest too.. The film was released to both YouTube and the Cinema’s simultaneously..

You can go to the main site for Home here

Booting Windows 7 from a USB disk - netbooks

Not exactly new, as lots of people have covered how to do this, in fact you can simply refer to this post to find out how… I just wanted to bring your attention to this.

From my perspective, I bought a Kogan netbook.  I have to say, for approx $450 (Australian), it is amazing.. 10″ screen, and runs really well (for a little extra - about $40 - you can get 2gb RAM, 8 hour battery).

Loading windows 7 was pretty straight forward - see the post above, you just need about 30 mins and a 4gb USB disk.  The netbook runs fine!!

Sun to build the biggest app store…

Sun believe they will get around 1 billion users to their new Java App Store (currently named vector)… I guess everyone is getting into the “app store” mode, started of course (well from a famous perspective) by Apple – i.e. iTunes/iPhone App Store.

Nokia are releasing their own app store too… so this is what the future of mobile computing looks like?

Do you need to send a fax.. try this free service

With myfax you can send up to 2 faxes free per day which can be up to 9 pages long… you do not have to sign up, and it supports more than 170 file formats.  Obviously if you want to send something like a physical page, you will need to scan that in – bare in mind I have a cheap Brother DCP-145 printer/scanner and it cost less than $60 au !

The total size limit per fax is 10mb.. but in reality this is huge, and especially if you simply need to send a quick fax.

You can send to over 40 countries, including Australia, US, most of Europe and Asia.

So click here to get started if you want to fax

Google to enter the real-time web search?

Some interesting reading, yet again about a twitter connection, in that Google seem to be saying that real-time search is essential.

I suppose also that twitter is publically searchable (just have to check out the multitude of twitter search clients, and within twitter itself), whilst the likes of facebook etc remain closed to outside influence.. and search.

VOIP calls, skype and second life virtual world?

Ok, so what is the link?

2nd Life (if you don’t know, this is the virtual world where you can take on the personality of an “avatar” and move around a virtual world and interact with others – and of course you can build things, and actually make real money!) – the link is http://secondlife.com/

Anyway, skype as most people now know, is a VOIP style messaging service which allows you to instant message, and most commonly, call people to talk to them – either free to other skype users, or of course a very small amount to call “real” telephone numbers.

So what is the link?

Well, 2nd life has take the skype idea, and gone virtual with it.. so now you can interact with someone else virtually, but also actually talk to them… spooky, but it seems one of those “next steps” that seems to be happening…

The new age of business cards

After flicking through much of my early morning blog reading today, I came across a very crazy but no doubt catchy idea for the evolution of business cards…

I read this from readwriteweb.com which is one of my favourites.

The idea is digital business cards.. and although ideas like this have been around for a while, these two examples are indeed interesting at least!

The first one is http://www.mynameise.com/connector which is crazy enough to really take off.  It is a simple device that lets you exchange your details electronically via a small gadget, which is also a USB device to allow you to connect to Mac/PC to download/change details.

The other one is the http://www.mingle360.com/about_minglestick.html mingle stick.. again a device to allow you to share your contact info securely..

Maybe it is time to forget embossed/mat/glossy or whatever paper based business contact cards, and save a bit of the environment too!

Into the clouds…

I have written a few times about cloud computing, and how it really seems to be changing the landscape of virtual server computing (and no doubt virtualisation of desktops).  Amazon have now launched another few sets of features to their EC2 (Elastic cloud) virtual server environment.

This enables monitoring of servers/traffic etc, and now load balancing/auto scaling of server resources.

You can read a bit more about this here
